Top-down modulation of stimulus drive via beta-gamma cross-frequency interaction

چکیده
SUMMARY Recently, several studies have demonstrated that visual stimulus routing is subserved by inter-areal gamma-band synchronization, whereas top-down influences are mediated by alpha-beta band synchronization. These processes might implement top-down control, if top-down and bottom-up mediating rhythms are coupled through cross-frequency interaction. To test this possibility, we investigated Granger-causal influences among awake macaque primary visual area V1, higher visual area V4 and parietal control area 7a during attentional task performance. Top-down 7a-to-V1 beta-band influences enhanced visually driven V1-to-V4 gamma-band influences. This enhancement was spatially specific and largest for a beta-to-gamma delay of ~100 ms, suggesting a causal relationship. We propose that this cross-frequency interaction mechanistically subserves the attentional control of stimulus selection.

UNLABELLED The dynamical behavior of the cortex is extremely complex, with different areas and even different layers of a cortical column displaying different temporal patterns. A major open question is how the signals from different layers and different brain regions are coordinated in a flexible manner to support function. Here, we considered interactions between primary auditory cortex and a...
متن کاملTop-Down Beta Rhythms Support Selective Attention via Interlaminar Interaction: A Model
Cortical rhythms have been thought to play crucial roles in our cognitive abilities. Rhythmic activity in the beta frequency band, around 20 Hz, has been reported in recent studies that focused on neural correlates of attention, indicating that top-down beta rhythms, generated in higher cognitive areas and delivered to earlier sensory areas, can support attentional gain modulation. To elucidate...
متن کاملDisrupted cholinergic modulation can underlie abnormal gamma rhythms in the schizophrenia
Gamma band oscillatory neural activity, considered critical in synchronizing brain areas, appears abnormal in patients with schizophrenia. Stimulus evoked gamma band power is lower, compared with healthy subjects, but baseline gamma power is higher. Based on the observation that cholinergic modulation regulates interactions between primary auditory cortex (A1) and an association cortex in the g...
متن کاملTop-Down Influences on Local Networks: Basic Theory with Experimental Implications
The response of a population of cortical neurons to an external stimulus depends not only on the receptive field properties of the neurons, but also the level of arousal and attention or goal-oriented cognitive biases that guide information processing. These top-down effects on cortical neurons bias the output of the neurons and affect behavioral outcomes such as stimulus detection, discriminat...
